Beach Galore at Mallorca

By Allisha Merry at 2010-10-12 06:51:17

The Island of Majorca is also known as Mallorca with a small population of only 581,564. This island is not very big, as it spans only 3,640 square kilometer or 120 km from one end to the other end, which is equivalent to the distance of Cape Formentor lighthouse to Puerto de San Telm.Tourists tend to favor the coastline of the island, without discovering the spectacular mountains and plains of the inland. The island’s capital is Palma which holds an estimated 300,000 residents; that is more than half the total island population. Its coastline stretches for about 15 km, covering towns and cosmopolitan districts, specifically from Palma beach to Cala Mayor.

Main Industry

Tourism is the heartbeat of this island. Since, as early as 1920s, it developed from a small scale of winter tourism to a large scale today, after the Spanish Civil War. Majorca was crowded with aspiring artists, who displayed their skills to carve their names for fame in Pollensa, such as Anglada Camarassa. These aspirants were challenged to design and construct Hotel Formentor in 1929. An Argentinian entrepreneur, named Adan Dihel, suffered much hardship personally to achieve his aspiration in building the grandest hotel on a beach, which is not conducive for relaxation and holidaying.

Nevertheless, the famed Hotel Formentor changed the island’s destiny in the tourism industry, as many other hotels got on the band wagon.Restaurants, pubs, discos, dances, cafes, entertainment outlets and amusement parks sprang up to complement the hotels’ functions and services; thus, fuelling the tourism in Majorca till today.

Numerous Beach choices

Illetes is a shoreline, where two coves are located, each at 75meters and 150meters. It is lined with fresh pine trees swaying in the breeze, making the place picturesque, especially with its excellent sand.

Portals Nous is a renowned beach that has been urbanely developed over the years, with magnificent structures and buildings.

Palma Nova has an impressive beach that is filled with fine sand, pine groves and good installations.

Magaluf and Santa Ponsa also boast of a magnificent beach. These are covered with refined sand leading to crystal clear water that is ever so inviting for a swim.

Peguera is an interesting and beautiful tourist resort, with lush pine trees surrounding its quiet beach of fine sand.

Cala Fornells is a small beach that also has fine sand.

Puerto de Andratx is an easy way to reach Camp de Mar beach as well as San Telm. It is the Dragonera Island which shelters San Telm beach, to give it a relaxing atmosphere, along with the pinewoods.

There are beaches galore on the east and north-east of Majorca. Anyone would wish to visit that part of the island. An interesting stop would be Banyalbufer which has only 535 inhabitants, but with magnificent coves nearby, that are worth exploring. The typical scenery here is tomato fields.

Valdemossa has a population of 1,300 houses, a monastery and a small port nearby. Whereas Deia, has only 414 locals, is a picturesque village on the mountain, with a small beach and Llucalcari coves.

Puerto de Soller’s beach is unique, as it is semi-circular in shape, to cater to its 1,000 inhabitants. Its beach is only 1km long. It is up to you to take time, to stroll around the island to check out its numerous beaches and enjoy the sun and the scenery.
