Discovery of Aragon

By Allisha Merry at 2010-10-12 06:50:23

Aragon is another Spanish community at the borders of France and the Pyrenees, with Zaragoza as its capital, together with Huesca and Teruel as provinces. This region is beautifully shaped by nature, with its voluminous mountain landscapes together with glacier lakes and forest reserves, where rare fauna and flora may be appreciated.Aragon is a region of contrast where you will observe the mountain range Moncayo on its east with Ebro valley, a vast plain.

You will feel the spirit of the medieval times as you pass monumental towns while crossing these 3 provinces of Aragon: Zaragoza, Teruel and Huesca. The Kingdom of Aragon, a Spanish culture center of medieval times, holds pieces that unlock your passion on historical culture. Not only does nature satisfy your adventurous spirit with its impressive mountain ranges for winter sports and summer picnics, you can also experience the region’s famous gastronomy, traditions, folklore and artisanship.

Cities of Aragon

The city of Zaragoza is situated at the Ebro River, whose name means ‘strong land’. It is identified as one of Spain’s huge monumental cities, with rich historical Romans and Moors heritage, which can be easily accessible at its museums. Zaragoza establishes itself as the prominent spot of Ebro valley, with an amazing and breath-taking landscape and picturesque traditional villages, which still practice the old customs and culture. Zaragoza founded over 2000 years ago, with a blend of old-Iberian, Gothic, Roman and Arabian heritage. Zaragoza is currently active in economy, playing host to prominent international fairs.

There are numerous churches and baroque buildings dating back to 17th century for your exploration. The interiors of these historical buildings are wall-paintings of religious arts and culture. You can also check out a solid 1541 Renaissance monument ‘La Lonja’, which functioned as a stock exchange bureau, but now, it is an avenue for expositions. There are plenty of palaces around Zaragoza date from 10th century to 17th century, such as the splendid Palacio de la Aljafería of 11th century, which is a rare Moorish building since the ‘Taifas’ dynasty.

Elsewhere, you’ll see ‘Mercado de Lanuza’, the Central Market which poses proud in its outstanding modernist architecture, influenced by Paris’ Eifel Tower with its metal piece structure. There are also bountiful Museums for your exploration pleasure, housing pre-historical and contemporary items, paintings, ceramics and sculptures. There are churches, mosques and monasteries whose buildings are unique, as they are antique ranging from 14th century till 18th century with extraordinary plateresque façade, historical crypts and relics of martyrs, gates in neoclassical style and Goya frescos.

Teruel is a largely Moorish dominated city as observed from its Mudejar-influence monuments. It has an interesting cathedral and notable bell towers. There are several quaint churches in San Martin, El Salvador and San Pedro, which are worth a look while you are there.Huesca city, which is situated at the Pyrenees mountain foot hill, has breath-taking landscapes to feast your eyes and soul on.
